Personetics Guide

Largest Banks and Credit Unions in the United States

Personetics evaluates the largest banks in the US across three key metrics.

Personetics works with the largest banks in the US and the largest credit unions in the US, creating strong partnerships that lead the industry.

The United States has the largest number of depository institutions in the world.  As of year-end 2023, these 9200 depository institutions included:

While that might seem like a lot of banks and credit unions, these numbers are off dramatically from their peaks in the 1980s. The downward trend continues today: there were 2225 fewer banks at year-end 2023 than at year-end 2013.

Most banks, including 97 of the 100 largest banks in the US by assets, are owned by one of 3830 bank holding companies.  Typically, the “BHC” and the bank look like one and the same from the outside, with the same leadership and largely the same name.  Some BHC’s own more than one bank, though even then, the banks might have essentially the same name.

Banks and credit unions come in a wide range of sizes. The National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) releases the number of members (customers) at each credit union, showing significant differences. As of the end of 2023:

  • 11 credit unions had more than one million members. Navy Federal Credit Union, by far the largest, had 13.3 million members.
  • 3085 credit unions, a sizable majority, had fewer than 10,000 members.

Navy Federal Credit Union is the largest credit union by assets. It had $171 billion at the end of 2023. This amount is greater than the total assets of the next five largest credit unions combined.

But even that dollar amount is much smaller compared to the largest bank holding companies. For example, JPMorgan Chase & Co. has $3.4 trillion in assets, which is about 20 times more than Navy Federal Credit Union.” Bank of America, Wells Fargo & Company, and Citigroup also have over $1 trillion each in assets.

The large scale on which some banks and credit unions operate offers advantages, such as:

  • Economies of scale in technology investment—a new feature or service can support millions of customers.
  • Banks can improve data analysis and AI technology by collecting large amounts of data.
  • Large financial institutions can acquire financial advisory firms and fintech companies to expand their product offerings.

But many smaller banks and credit unions have found great success through a variety of strategies, such as:

  • Developing longstanding relationships in rural communities
  • Offering niche products
  • Leaning into a reputation for friendly, high-touch service
  • Taking advantage of a smaller, more nimble organization to bring new products and services to market faster

Many ways exist to size up banks and credit unions. What’s the best way?  The answer depends on what you’re trying to understand:

  • Total Assets is a comprehensive measure that includes loans, investments, and intangible assets.
  • Total Deposits show how big a retail bank is. They are mainly customer money held by the bank.
  • Domestic Deposits and Assets. A few (mostly large) banks do business in other countries.  Domestic Deposits and Assets captures the size of the bank in the United States.
  • Call Report Data. Every bank and credit union must file a “Call Report,” with its regulator. These reports offer a wealth of data. To know the size of a bank’s consumer banking business, look at the amounts in deposit products for individuals and families.
This will give you an idea of how many customers the bank serves and how much money they have deposited. The more money in these accounts, the larger the consumer banking business of the bank. It is important to pay attention to these numbers when evaluating the bank’s performance and market presence.

To get you started, we’ve included two charts.  The first uses data from FDIC.gov.  It ranks the largest 250 federally insured banks by total assets and also shows domestic deposits.

The second uses data from NCUA.gov. The list ranks the top 250 credit unions in the country by members. It also includes information on their assets and deposits. All of this information is within the country.

Note: Dollar figures in thousands.  As of December 31, 2023.  Reporting is at the bank level (some Bank Holding Companies own more than one bank).

Chris Musto

Director of Business Consulting

Chris brings over 20 years of experience in digital and financial services strategy.  Chris comes to Personetics from roles consulting to research firms and fintechs on product and growth strategies.

Earlier, Chris was head of digital strategy for the Citizens Bank consumer bank, where he led strategy development and partner selection for a digital transformation, reorganized the digital banking analytics capability, and co-founded an accelerator.  Prior to Citizens, Chris advised banks on digital and multi-channel strategy at Novantas, now Curinos.

Prior to Curinos, Chris led the digital CX business of Keynote (now Dynatrace), where his team created benchmarks still used by many of the largest banks and insurers.  Chris started out at D. E.
